Common Questions

How young is "too young" for my child to start taking voice?

Age 6 is an excellent age to begin training.  Some 5 year olds may be able to start depending on the level of gifting.  Most instructors won't take young children because they

  1. Don't know how to deal with their short attention spands
  2. Know that their voices are going to change

However I have discoverd through my teaching experience that young children learn very quickly and are able to obtain the neccessary technique through the changing of their voice.

Regardless of the vocal changes that WILL occur the technique used to sing properly WILL NOT change!  Therefore, if your young child has the desire to learn to sing...They CAN!

Can you be too old to learn to sing?

Absolutely not!  If you have the desire to learn...you can!  My oldest vocal student was 63 and she learned how to breathe properly, clear up her tone, and harmonize better with her choral colleages!

I've been told that I'm "tone deaf" is it possible to train my ear?

YES!  It will take much patience and ear training but it is certainly possible with diligence to train an ear to consistently sing on pitch.

I've been trained classically.  Can I learn to sing contemporary music without damaging my voice?

Absolutely!  You will have to have patience to learn a better supporting technique, but it is possible and the results are amazing!  Once trained you will be able to tap into your power vocally, blend tones and express a more variety of color through song!

After i do a gig or set I get extreemly hoarse...why?

You're not supporting properly.  It's IMPOSSIBLE to sing without air!  Your air is your sound, so if you're not taking proper breaths you can't release the neccessary air to coat your chords and help your sound flow while singing.

Is sucking on lemons good for your voice?

NO!  Lemons are extreemy acidic and are not good by themselves.  If you want to include them in a hot tea with honey or just warm water they can be quite beneficial.  However, you don't want to suck on them.

Are Halls cough drops good for your voice?

NO!  They dry your throat out.  Ricola's, on the other hand are GREAT!  They are all natural.  Honey lemon and echinachea are my favorite.

What should I do if my throat is sore from singing?

Go on vocal rest; which simply means don't sing or speak unneccesarily.  Throat Coat, slippery elm, warm teas, and plenty of water will help also.  You could just have been dehydrated and forced yourself to sing without the neccessary moisture to comfort your chords. Or you could have been straining from lack of support.  Either way you need to stop talking and make extra efforts to soothe your chords.  If the pain persists- go see a doctor.
